"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." — Confucius
The value of experience as a tool in the creation of knowledge was seen as early as the 4th century B.C. when Aristotle stated, " Using the language of knowledge is no proof that one possess it."The Training AdvantEdge has found that simply attending a workshop is not enough for learning to occur. We believe that learners must do something during the process of acquiring new knowledge in order for the experience to be useful.
Based on this philosophy, we have create our own experientially-based E.D.G.E. learning model. For any experience to truly be beneficial, it needs to encompass four elements:
1. EXPERIENCE: "Do it"
Having the participants perform or complete an activity with little to no help from the facilitator. Examples might include making models, role-playing, giving a presentation, or playing a game.
2. DISCUSSION: "What Happened?"
Having the participants publicly share their results, reactions, and observations. Examples include talking about their experiences, sharing reactions and observations, or discussing feelings generated by the experience.
Having the participants connect the experience with real world examples. Examples include finding general trends or common truths in the experience, identifying "real life" principles that surfaced, or generating key terms that capture the learning.
4. EXECUTION: "Now What?"
Having the participants apply and practice what was learned in a similar or different situation (learning from past experiences). Examples include discussing how new learning can be applied to other situations and role playing, discussing how issues raised can be useful in the future through vignettes, discussing how more effective behaviors can develop from new knowledge through case studies, or helping each individual feel a sense of ownership for what was learned through creating an action plan.
Research shows that we learn . . .
10% of what we read
20% of what we hear
30% of what we see
50% of what we see and hear
70% of what we discuss
80% of what we experience
Methods we often use during the E.D.G.E. process:
* Lecturettes
* Discussions
* Case Studies
* Inventories
* Audiovisuals
* Role Plays
* Self Assessments
* Checklists
* Audit Instruments
* Action Plans
We view every workshop we as a "learning journey." Without the integration of these four elements, learning will not occur.
